Heliconia is a tropical flowering plant native to Central and South America and some Pacific islands. Related to Banana and Bird of Paradise, it is grown for its spectacular, long-lasting bracts (modified leaves) which form the ornamental flower structure. A cornerstone of the tropical cut flower industry, it is also used in resort landscaping and as a bold container specimen in tropical gardens.
